Using Optical Flow in Nuke to Create Motion Blur

Let’s face it, post motion blur effects are great, especially when you’re under a tight deadline. There are many great plugins that help achieve this effect, but if you’re using Nuke you can use the sofware to autiomatically calculate the motion vectors and apply the blur for you! Pretty neat, huh? Well here’s a quick tip and overview of the process to get you started....

Ok, first hit R on your keyboard or select the Read node to import your footage into Nuke.

Next to to the Etc... button on the left, then select All Plugins. If nothing shows up just hit the update button then go back. Next go to the letter O, and select the Oflow.

Add this to your scene, change the Speed parameters to 1. This way it doesn’t effect the speed of your clip.

Now just play with the Shutter Time and Shutter Samples parameters till you get the desired motion blur effect.
